You are invited to a large
party. Loud music
is playing, and lots of
people are dancing.
Groups of people are
mingling with
each other, making
small talk
about many
different topics.
loud:
fuerte, estrepitosa; are mingling: se encuentran socializando; with
each other: mutuamente; small talk: charla sin importancia (también
se la llama chit-chat); topics: temas (de conversación);
What do
you do? Do
you
mingle
all night and talk
to as many people as
you can? Later,
you cannot fall
asleep -- you want
more conversation!
talk to as many people as you can: conversas con todos los que puedes;
later: más adelante;
Or do you
prefer to have one-on-one
conversations with
just a few people?
Maybe you find
a quiet corner and
people-watch. Or perhaps you
cannot wait to go
home early and relax by
yourself.
one-on-one
conversations: charlas entre pocas personas; maybe you find: quizás
encuentras; a quiet corner: un rincón silencioso, apartado; and people-watch:
y te dedicas a observar a la gente; you cannot wait to go home early: no
ves la hora de irte temprano a casa; relax by yourself: relajarte a
solas;
Which of
these people sound
most like you?
Person A, who
tries to talk to everyone
and stays late? Or
Person B, who prefers to
talk to only a few
people and leaves
early?
sound most
like you?: ¿... se parecen más a ti?; stays late: se queda hasta
tarde; to talk to only a few people: conversar con pocas personas;
leaves early: se retira temprano;
If you
said Person A, you
are probably more
extroverted.
If you said
Person B, you are
probably more introverted.
Or perhaps you are
Person C and fall somewhere
in the middle.
more
extroverted: más extrovertido; more introverted: más introvertido;
perhaps you are: quizás seas; fall somewhere in the middle: te ubicas
en el medio;
INTROVERT VS. EXTROVERT.
Introvert and
extrovert are two
commonly used words to
describe a person’s
personality. And they are
also commonly
misused and misunderstood.
commonly used: utilizadas normalmente; to describe: para describir;
misused and misunderstood: utilizadas inadecuadamente y malinterpretadas;
Introverts
may be viewed as quiet,
shy
and timid.
They may be called
“wallflowers,”
meaning they are
so quiet they
blend in with
flowers on the wallpaper.
may be viewed
as: pueden ser vistos como; quiet: poco comunicativos; shy:
huraños; timid: tímidos; "wallflowers": "alhelíes" (personas a
quienes no les gusta participar en las fiestas); meaning: significando
que; so quiet: tan poco comunicativos; they blend in with flowers on
the wallpaper: que ellos se confunden con las flores del empapelado (porque
suelen recostarse contra una pared para pasar desapercibidos);
Extroverts
may be viewed as
bold,
confident,
loud and full of
energy. They are often
called “alpha,”
meaning a leader of the group.
bold: audaz; confident: seguro de sí mismo; loud: ruidoso,
chillón; full of energy: lleno de vitalidad; "alpha": líder de un
grupo;
Introverted and
extroverted people
may fit those
descriptions. But these
same descriptions
do not define introversion
and extroversion properly.
may fit: pueden encajar (en); these same: estas mismas; do not
define ... properly: no definen a la ... adecuadamente;
Introverts and
extroverts use
their brains differently,
and they get their
energy differently.
Introversion is the state of
being mostly
concerned with one's
own mental life.
Extroversion is the opposite.
Extroversion is the state of
being mostly
concerned with what is
outside oneself.
use their brains: utilizan sus cerebros; differently: de diferente
manera; they get their energy: se energizan; mostly concerned with:
mayormente preocupado/a con; one's own mental life: el propio proceso
mental; the opposite: lo contrario; with what is outside oneself:
con lo que nos rodea (con lo que está fuera de nosotros);
People who
consider themselves
introverts may say
they “need to be
alone to “charge
their batteries”
or that being in large
crowds makes them
tired. However,
introverts may still
love being social
and going to parties. But
such activities
require time to prepare and
time to repair.
people who consider themselves: las personas que se consideran; need to
be alone: necesitan estar solos; to "charge their batteries": para
"cargar sus baterías" (descansar para recuperar fuerzas y energía); or that
being in large crowds: o que estar en grandes grupos de gente; makes them
tired: los cansa; however: sin embargo, no obstante ello;
introverts may still love being social: a los introvertidos les puede atraer
socializar; such activities: dichas actividades; require time to
prepare: exigen un tiempo de preparación;
Extroverts
may say, “I don’t need ‘alone
time’. I feel more
relaxed being
around other people.”
Even so,
extroverts can still
feel unsure or not
confident among other
people.
alone time:
período de soledad; I feel more relaxed: me relajo más; being around
other people: estando rodeado de gente; even so: aun así, con todo;
can still feel unsure: pueden llegar a sentirse indecisos, titubeantes;
not confident: inseguros; among: entre (más de dos personas);
THE POWER OF INTROVERTS.
Susan Cain
is the author of “Quiet: The
Power of Introverts.”
In an article
published in Psychology
Today, she explains that
shyness is often
considered a
synonym
of introversion. It is not. Shyness
is having a fear of
being judged
poorly by others. Introverts
just prefer being
in quiet environments.
shyness: la timidez; a fear of being judged poorly ny others: temor a
ser mal considerado por los demás; just prefer being in quiet environments:
simplemente prefieren encontrarse en ambientes relajados;
For example,
Bill Gates, the
inventor of Microsoft, is quiet
and bookish,
she writes. But Gates
does not care
about the opinions other
people may have
of him. He is an introvert,
writes Cain, but he is not
shy.
quiet and bookish: relajado e intenso lector (alguien interesado en leer
libros y no realizar deportes o actividades físicas); does not care about:
no le preocupan las opiniones; the opinions other people may have of him:
lo que otras personas puedan opinar sobre él;
The famous
singer and actor Barbra
Streisand has an outgoing,
larger-than-life
personality, adds
Cain. But Barbra Streisand,
she writes, also has a
paralyzing case of stage fright.
This is a commonly used
fixed expression.
Performers who suffer from
stage fright
can quite
literally be frozen or paralyzed
on stage.
actor:
actriz (actualmente el sustantivo actor se usa para hombres o mujeres
indistintamente); outgoing: sociable; larger-than-life:
formidable, colosal; adds: agrega; paralyzing case of stage fright:
(USA = paralyzing; UK = paralising) situación paralizante de miedo
o fobia al público; performers who suffer from: los artistas que sufren
de; frozen: inmovilizados; on stage: en el escenario;
Cain
considers Barbara Streisand
a shy extrovert.
a shy extrovert: una extrovertida con cierta timidez (le gusta estar rodeada
de gente pero no sentirse el centro de atracción);
In other
words, there are nervous
introverts and calm
extroverts. And there are
also shy
extroverts and bold introverts.
And there are many
other combinations in between.
in other
words: es decir; nervous introverts: introvertidos nerviosos; calm
extroverts: extrovertidos relajados; bold introverts: introvertidos
audaces; in between: en el medio.
