3. CLOTHES :: PHRASAL VERBS |
|
|
Revisamos hoy 22 phrasal verbs (o verbos frasales)
referidos a la ropa. Es importante que practiques estos verbos muy utilizados, tanto en el inglés escrito como en el conversacional. Al pie del texto un glosario bilingüe te ayudará a interpretarlo.
When you have put on weight (engordar, aumentar de peso), you suddenly discover that your clothes burst out (estallar, explotar) at the seams, so you have to let them out (aflojar, agrandar). Yet if you lose weight, your clothes look as if they were hand-me-downs from your plump sister; then you have to take them in (achicar), at the waist, for instance. If your jeans are too long, you can always turn them up (doblar el ruedo hacia arriba) without cutting them.
A mother really knows how to protect her children. She buckles up (abrochar una hebilla) her daughter's shoes or she buttons up (abotonar) his son's cardigan before he leaves. And if it is very cold outside, she also zips their jackets up (subir el cierre de una prenda).
Some kids are very neat. Every night they hung up (colgar la ropa) their clothes and after taking off (quitarse) their shoes they put them under the bed. But that's not always so; many children kick off their shoes (quitarse los zapatos con los pies) and fly them away (tirar una prenda por el aire) as soon as he got home.
It's amazing how fast children grow!! You buy them new clothes, and before they have had time to wear them out (gastar la ropa), they grow out of them (la ropa queda pequeña). They always find the time to wear out (desgastar el calzado) their shoes, though.
Women like to be elegant, so they enjoy dressing up (vestirse elegante) to go to a theatre. And most men like to put on (ponerse ropa) a new suit for a special event. And, of course, if they buy new shoes, they always try them on (probarse ropa) before buying.
Many years ago, miniskirts came into fashion (ponerse de moda). The women who could not afford to buy new fashionable skirts quickly took up (subir el ruedo de una prenda) the hems of their skirts and dresses; naturally, when miniskirts went out (no estar de moda)., they let them down (alargar, soltar el ruedo).again!! Fashions trends are hard to follow, aren't they? |
|
seams:
costuras; hand-me-downs: ropa usada; plump:
gordita, regordeta; neat: prolijos; how fast: con qué rapidez; though: asimismo, de todos modos;
event: acontecimiento; miniskirts: minifaldas; afford: afrontar un gasto; hems: ruedos; fashion trends: las tendencias de la moda; hard to: difíciles de. |

CLOTHING EXPRESSIONS - Part I |
AUDIO |
|
|
Now, the VOA Special English
program "Words And Their Stories". |
|
Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let's see if I can name a few off the cuff, or without any preparation. |
off the cuff: de manera improvisada (sacar de la manga)[cuff = puño de una camisa]; |
|
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are restless or nervous have ants in their pants. They might also fly by the seat of their pants. They use their natural sense to do something instead of their learned knowledge. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family. |
lower parts: parte inferior; restless: inquietos; ants in their pants: impacientes (con hormigas en los pantalones); they might also: también podrían; fly by the seat of their pants: dejarse llevar por su intuición [seat = parte trasera de un pantalón]; natural sense: percepción natural; instead of: en lugar de; learned knowledge: conocimiento científico; caught with their pants down: atrapados en una situación avergonzante; they are found: alguien los encuentra; takes control: toma las decisiones ; what to do: qué hay que hacer; wears the pants in the family: lleva los pantalones en la familia; |
|
Pants usually have pockets to
hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can
burn a hole in your pocket.
Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than
usual, you may have to
tighten your belt. You may have to live on less money and
spend your money carefully. But once you have succeeded in budgeting your money,
you will have that skill
under your belt. |
is likely to be spent: probablemente sea gastada; burn a hole in your pocket: compulsión por el consumo, necesidad de gastar rápidamente el dinero (el dinero arde en los bolsillos; belt: cinturón; to hold up: para sostener; less money than usual: menos dinero que de costumbre; tighten your belt: gastar menos (ajustarse el cinturón); to live on less money: vivir con menos dinero; succeeded in: logrado; budgeting: presupuestado, organizado los gastos; skill: habilidad; under your belt: como experiencia; |
|
I always praise people who can
save their money and not spend too much. I really
take my hat off
to them. Yet, when it comes to my
own money, I spend it at the
drop of a hat – immediately, without waiting. And sadly, you
cannot pull money out of a
hat. You cannot get money by inventing or imagining it. |
praise: elogio, admiro; take my hat off to: me quito el sombrero ante; yet: sin embargo; when it comes to: en lo que respecta a; own: propio; I spend it: yo lo gasto; at the drop of a hat: instantáneamente, sin reflexionar; sadly: por desgracia; pull money out of a hat: no se puede hacer magia con el dinero; |
|
Boots are a heavy or strong kind
of shoes. People who are too
big for their boots think they are more important than they
really are. I dislike such people. I really do. You can
bet your boots
on that. Yet, truly important people are hard to replace. Rarely can you
fill their shoes
or replace them with someone equally effective. |
boots: las botas; who are too big for their boots: que se la creen, que se le suben los humos a la cabeza; I dislike such: me disgusta ese tipo de; I really do: lo digo de verdad; bet your boots: estar completamente seguro; truly: genuinamente; hard to replace: difíciles de reemplazar; rarely: contadas veces; fill their shoes: sustituirlos, reemplazarlos; |
|
My father is an important person.
He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that
cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too firm and
severe. They think he is a real
stuffed shirt. But I
know that my father wears
his heart on his sleeve. He shows his feelings openly. And,
he knows how to keep his
shirt on. He stays calm and never gets angry or too excited. |
runs: administra; sleeves: mangas; too firm and severe: obstinado y estricto; stuffed shirt: persona engreída o presuntuosa; wears his heart on his sleeve: demuestra abiertamente sus sentimientos (lleva el corazón en la manga de su camisa); openly: sin ocultamientos; to keep his shirt on: mantener la calma; never gets angry: jamás se enfada; |
|
Also, my father has never
lost his shirt
in a business deal. He is too smart to lose all or most of his money. This is
because my father rolls up
his sleeves and prepares to work hard. He often has a special
plan or answer to a problem that he can use if he needs it. He is like a person
who does magic tricks. We say he has a
card up his sleeve. |
lost his shirt: arriesgarse en negocios turbios (perder hasta la camisa); rolls up his sleeves: se dedica seriamente a trabajar (arremangarse); magic tricks: trucos ilusionistas; a card up his sleeve: un recurso alternativo (un as en la manga). |
