1. EDITORIAL

Hola amig@:

ACERCA DE NUESTRO AUDIO-TEXTO DE HOY.
Mucha gente ha expresado la necesidad de un pronombre singular de tercera persona de género neutro; es decir, un pronombre que pueda utilizarse cuando se desconoce el sexo de alguien/algo o cuando el individuo no es ni hombre ni mujer. Tales casos ocurren cuando debemos hablar de:
(1) personas transexuales que se incomodan cuando son abordadas con pronombres masculinos o femeninos;
(2) computadoras o robots con inteligencia artificial;
(3) personajes de ficción sin sexo;

PRONOUNS AND GENDER

AUDIO

When I was on the train yesterday, I heard someone say this: "Someone left their bag on the train".
heard: escuché a (hear/heard/heard/hearing); left: dejó (leave/left/left/leaving);

Can
you find anything wrong with the sentence?

anything wrong:
algo erróneo, algún error;

If
you looked in a traditional English grammar book, you would learn that the sentence should be, "Someone left his bag on the train". The rule is to use the
singular pronoun "he" when the gender of a person is not known.

if you looked in:
si revisaras (subjuntivo pasado, estructura similar a la del pasado simple); you should learn: aprenderías, te enterarías de; rule: regla (gramatical); pronoun: observa la pronunciación = /próu-náun/; gender: género gramatical (femenino o masculino); is not known: no se conoce;

But, if you asked native English speakers if there is something wrong with the sentence, many would probably answer "no".

if you asked:
si le preguntaras (subjuntivo pasado, estructura similar a la del pasado simple); would probably answer: probablemente responderían (que);

The pronoun "their" is generally plural. The speaker was talking about just one person. However, American English speakers use "their" and "they" as singular pronouns all the time in spoken English. They use it when the
gender of a person is not known. They also use it when they do not want to say the gender.
just: solamente; however: sin embargo; as: como;

Writers
also try to use both "he" and "she" to show that they do not
discriminate against females. They might also use "he/she" or "him/her" instead of choosing one singular pronoun.
both "he" and "she": tanto "he" como "she"; against females: en contra del sexo femenino; he/she: se lee "he slash she (slash = barra oblicua o diagonal; instead of + ING verb: instead of choosING (en lugar de elegir);

Another
approach to this problem is to use a
gender-neutral pronoun – a word that does not show gender. One place where these pronouns became popular is in virtual or online communities.
approach: estrategia, metodología; gender-neutral: de género neutro;

In Sweden, two nursery schools have used the gender-neutral pronoun, "hen" since 2012. The Swedish government started using "hen" this year and added it to the official dictionary.

Sweden:
Suecia (no confundir con Switzerland = Suiza); nursery schools: guarderías infantiles; hen: en sueco suele traducirse como "extraño";

A student organization at the University of Wisconsin recommends using gender-neutral pronouns like those in the following chart to respect
transgender individuals.
recommend + ING verb: recommends usING (recomienda usar); like those of: como los de; to respect: para respetar a (las); chart: cuadro (acceso al final del artículo); transgender individuals: personas transexuales;

Teresa
Schmedding is an editor at the Daily Herald Media Group and a member of the
American Copy Editors Society (ACES).

editor:
jefe/a de redacción;

At a recent meeting of the organization in Pittsburgh, she says some editors discussed the use of the pronoun "they". Ms. Schmedding says some members were unhappy with the use of "his" or "her" in the stories.

were unhappy:
estaban disconformes, insatisfechos;

"Language is a constantly evolving thing and we need to evolve. It has become so common, in our language now, that people frequently use the singulartheyall the time. My question is, what’s the harm?"

a constantly evolving thing:
algo en constante desarrollo; we need to evolve: necesitamos evolucionar; it has become so common: se ha convertdo en algo tan habitual (la oradora utiliza la contracción it's become); what's the harm?: ¿cuál es el daño? ¿cuál es el problema?

Writers
look to books like "The Chicago Manual of Style" for the rules. This book says to use a plural noun, if possible, and to avoid using the singular pronouns "him" or "her" when the gender of the subject is not stated.

look to:
confían en; if possible: a ser posible; to avoid + ING verb: avoid usING (evitar el uso de); is not stated: no está definido;

For example, the sentence:
"Each student brought his or her book to class" would change to "The students brought their books books to class".
brought: trajo (bring/brought/brought/bringing); would change: se cambiaría por;

Ms
. Schmedding says the most important thing for writers is to make the language easy to understand.
to make the language easy to understand: facilitar la comprensióin del idioma;

"The overriding issue is clarity. We want people to understand what we are saying. So if people already understand when you use the singular
'they' what you mean, why make up a new word?"
overriding issue: problema fundamental; clarity: claridad (de comprensión); why make up: por qué inventar (make up es un phrasal verb con varios significados que puedes consultar en nuestro tutorial OM Phrasal
http://tinyurl.com/kcyvm7h);

A look back at the history of English shows that great writers used
'they' as a singular pronoun. Chaucer, writing in the 14th century, used it, as did Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and George Bernard Shaw.

look back:
mirada retrospectiva; as did: como lo hicieron;

Then
in the late 18th century, grammar writers said 'they' should not be used as a singular pronoun.
in the late: hacia finales del; grammar writers: los gramáticos, los lingüistas;

Today
, many English speakers are saying that, "if everyone uses it, they must be right".
I’m Jonathan Evans.
they must be right: deben tener razón.
