EDUARDO: |
Excuse me. |
CLERK: |
Yes, how can I help you? |
EDUARDO: |
You see this shirt?
I bought it here a few weeks ago, but the first time I washed it, the
color changed: It went from bright red to light pink. |
CLERK: |
How did you wash it? |
EDUARDO: |
Well, I just
tossed
it into the washing machine with my other clothes. |
CLERK: |
What temperature did you use? |
EDUARDO: |
I usually wash my clothes in hot
water, so I
guess
hot. |
CLERK: |
Well, did you check the washing instructions? |
EDUARDO: |
Um...
maybe not. |
CLERK: |
Well,
you see here on this label?
It says, "Wash in cold water only". |
EDUARDO: |
Uhm-hmm. |
CLERK: |
So I'm really sorry, but
since
you didn't follow the washing instructions, I can't really do anything
for you. |

A COMMENT ABOUT AMERICAN ENGLISH COLLOQUIALISM:
Please notice that both Eduardo and the clerk do not use any auxiliaries in the sentences highlighted in blue. Although not gramatically correct, this is a colloquial way to express informal questions instead of using the formal alternatives: Can you see this shirt? or Can you see here on this label? |
GLOSSARY:
to toss:
to throw (arrojar, tirar); to guess: to suppose, to think (suponer, creer); maybe not: perhaps not (quizás no); since: for the reason that, on account of (puesto que, dado que). |

HOW TO TREAT YOUR SKIN / COMO TRATAR TU PIEL
The
skin is the body’s largest organ. The sun, pollution and stress can
damage your skin. If you follow these six
basic suggestions, your skin will look great.
La piel es el
órgano más grande del cuerpo. El sol, la polución y el estrés pueden
dañar tu piel. Si sigues estos seis consejos básicos, tu piel lucirá
fantástica. |
|
1. Begin
the day with a moisturizer with a sunblock of factor 15 or higher to
prevent wrinkles and skin cancer. |
2. Long
hot showers or baths can dry your skin out. Make your shower or
bath a shorter, cooler one. |
3.
Always wash your face before you go to bed. Make-up can clog
pores and leave you with pimples. Use a facial soap or gentle facial
cleanser. |
4. After
cleansing your face, use a dermatological product that will treat your skin
while you sleep. There are many different products available to treat acne or
help reduce wrinkles. Ask your chemist or pharmacist for advice on which
products will best suit you. Remember, the most expensive products are
not always the best or most effective ones. Do not be afraid to ask your chemist
or pharmacist to compare differently-priced products for you. |
5. Don’t
forget to moisturize the rest of your body! Look for creams and lotions that
have alpha hydroxy acid to gently take away dead skin cells. |
6.
Finally, make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day and to get
plenty of sleep. These last two actions cost little and probably have the
most beneficial effect of all. |
