PREPOSITION TORMENT. Prepositions are the
torment of many students precisely because there are no magic formulas to
learning them. So, whenever you are reading and you find a use of a preposition
that surprises you, say the expression in a loud
voice, and make a note of the structure. Reading in English is the most
natural and least difficult way of assimilating prepositions and many
other grammar structures.
gramaticales. |
DEPENDENT PREPOSITIONS
Remember, we can say arrive AT or arrive IN, but never
arrive TO. ARRIVE AT
refers to a specific place such as a building, the airport, a train or bus
station, etc. ARRIVE IN is used for anything larger (a city, region,
country or continent). Some examples: What time did you arrive arrived
AT the hotel? (not What time did you arrive to the hotel?);
I arrived IN Japan at 8:00 am. (not I arrived to Japan
at 8:00 am). But remember: ARRIVE HOME (without a
preposition): He arrived home yesterday (not He arrived at
home yesterday).
AT FOR ABILITY
When we are evaluating the ability with which someone does something, we
use AT: Mirta is good AT maths, but she is bad AT volleyball; Mike is
better than me AT swimming, but he is terrible AT French.
INCORRECT OMISSIONS
After some specific verbs, many Spanish-speaking students have a tendency
to omit the prepositions or use a different one:
ASK FOR SOMETHING: Don't forget to ask FOR a receipt after you pay.
(not Don't forget to ask a receipt after you pay)
BLAME FOR SOMETHING: Everybody blamed her FOR the accident.
(not Everybody blamed her by the accident)
BLAME ON SOMEONE: Everybody blamed the accident ON her. (not
Everybody blamed the accident to her)
CONGRATULATE ON SOMETHING: I congratulated Federico and Martha
ON their success. (not I congratulated Federico and Martha
by their success)
CONSIST OF: Our meal consisted OF seven courses. (not
Our meal consisted in/on seven courses)
CRASH INTO: He lost control of the car and crashed INTO a wall. (not
He lost control of the car and crashed against/with a wall)
DEPEND ON: I don't know. It depends ON the traffic. (not
I don't know. It depends of the traffic)
LAUGH/SMILE AT: Everyone will laugh AT her new haircut. (not
Everyone will laugh of her new haircut)
LIVE ON: Marisa can't live ON her low salary. (not
Marisa can't live of/with her low salary)
PAY FOR: You should pay FOR your drinks when you order them. (not
You should pay your drinks when you order them)
PROVIDE WITH OM Personal provides all its students WITH
multimedia tools. (not OM Personal provides all its
students multimedia tools)
REMIND OF: Your apartment reminds me OF the one I bought in
1985. (not Your apartment reminds me the one I bought in
1985)
REMIND ABOUT: Thanks for reminding me ABOUT the party. (not
Thanks for reminding me the party)
SPEND ON: How much money do you spend ON food? (not
How much money do you spend in/with food?)
INTRUSIVE PREPOSITIONS
On the other hand, some verbs don't take prepositions in English though
you might expect them to:
ANSWER: Are you going to answer my question? (not Are you going to
answer to my question?)
ASK SOMEONE: Ask Jimmy for the money. (not Ask to Jimmy for the
money)
ENTER: He entered the stadium at 06:00 pm (not He entered to the
stadium at 06:00 pm)
FINISH: I finish work at seven. (not I finish to work at seven)
LEAVE: Helen left her country in 1970. (not Helen left to her
country in 1970)
REACH: What time will we reach Lima? (not What time will we reach
to/at Lima)
TELL: You should tell her the truth, or You should tell the truth to her.
(not You should tell to her the truth)
THREE PECULIARITIES OF PREPOSITIONS IN A SENTENCE
1. Prepositions are normally followed by a noun or a pronoun. The only
verb form that can follow a preposition is the gerund or ING form: AFTER
eating the chicken he drank a soda.
2. Prepositions can also be followed by WH words or clauses: FROM what he
said I think he was pretty annoyed.
3. In contrast to many other languages, in English prepositions can end a
sentence: What did you do that FOR? Who are you looking AT? This is the
building where OM Personal office is IN; She is the writer I was referring
TO; Who does Sylvia remind you OF? |
