Formality
is about your relationship with the person you are speaking or writing
to. If you use formal language, it may be because you want to show
respect or politeness, or to put yourself at a distance. The use of
informal language can show friendliness, equality, or a feeling of
closeness with someone. Never use informal language just to sound fluent
or witty.
La formalidad tiene que ver con tu relación con la persona a quien le
hablas o escribes. Si usas lenguaje formal será porque quieres mostrar
respeto o educación o establecer cierta distancia. El uso de lenguaje
informal demuestra simpatía, igualdad o un sentimiento de intimidad con
alguien. Nunca utilices lenguaje informal sólo por parecer fluido o
ingenioso. |
Some
groups of words can be put on a scale from very formal to very
informal.
Algunos grupos de palabras pueden ubicarse en una escala de muy formal
a muy informal.

Informal
words are often short, monosyllabic, and they usually come from slang.
Formal equivalents are shown in brackets.
Generalmente las palabras informales son cortas, monosilábicas y
provienen de la jerga. Los equivalentes formales aparecen entre
paréntesis.

This
magazine cost me ten bucks ( = dollars) Esta revista me
costó diez mangos (= dólares).
My bike (= bicycle) was stolen Me robaron la bici (=
bicicleta).
Come and meet my mom and dad (= mother and father) Ven a
conocer a mi vieja y mi viejo (=madre y padre).
Hi, pal! (=Hello, friend). I can't stop now. See you, bye!! (=
goodbye)
Qué tal, amigazo! (= Hola, amigo). No puedo quedarme ahora.
Nos vemos, chau!! (= adios).

Shortening
a word tends to make it less formal. Obvioulsy the Spanish translation
does not always make sense.
El acortamiento de las palabras sugiere menos formalidad. Obviamente
no siempre tiene sentido la traducción al español.

I'll
meet you in the lab(oratory). Te veo en el
labo(ratorio).
We should put an ad(vertisement). Tendríamos que poner
un avi(so).
Are you still on the (tele)phone? ¿Todavías
estás en el (telé)fono?
My sister is a vet(erinarian). Mi hermana es
vete)rinaria).

You
will often see formal words in signs, notices, and directions. Here
are some:
